Whiskey In Cocktails

For non whiskey drinkers it is all to easy to dismiss it as a great cocktail mixer. Whiskey alone is an aquired taste and is relatively hard to be exposed to unless you go out of your way to sample it straight. For this reason it can be easy to agree with the masses in that it all tastes the same. However there is a multitude of flavours to be found from the sweetness and easy drinking blends to the peaty, smokey single malts of the highlands.

Whiskey Sour

Whiskey tends to be sweeter than Bourbon and fr this reason it actually makes a great cocktail mixer. A great entry into the world of whiskey cocktails is the classic whiskey sour.

  • 2 parts Whiskey
  • 1 part lemon juice
  • ½ part sugar syrup
  • ½ part egg white
  • Cubed ice
  • To garnish: 1 cherry and an orange slice
By adding the sweetness of the lemon juice and sugar syrup the whiskey is made much more palatable and approachable for the non whiskey drinker.
Old Fashioned

•2 oz. rye or bourbon
•2 dashes Angostura bitters
•1 sugar cube
•club soda

The Old Fashioned is a go to drink for experimenting with whiskey in cocktails. There are so many flavours and styles of whiskey that their is one out there for everyone and you just have to find it. By changing the types of whiskey in an Old Fashioned the whiskey in general is made much more approachable and you might find yourself fancying just a straight whiskey now and again!

So next time you are perusing the cocktail menu be sure and try either a Whiskey Sour or and Old Fashioned and even if your not a whiskey drinker you will be sure to enjoy it!
